I chose to read A Stillness at Appomattox written by Bruce Catton simply because the Civil War is the most interesting thing in history that I have ever learned about. This book begins in the final year of the war, May 1864, to April of 1865. Also in the year 1865, Grant led the Army of the Potomac to victory over Robert E Lee. This was a memorable part in the book and also a memorable part of history that has been retold over and over again in history classes from when I was in elementary school. It didn’t take long for Robert E. Lee and his men to realize that there wasn’t a way in the world for them to defeat the Union with their lack of soldiers. The details of this historic win for Grant and his troops was told so well in the book that it made me feel like I was one of the soldiers that was celebrating with them. With recent conflicts about the confederate flag, I wish more people were educated on the Civil War and realized that the flag itself did not symbolize slavery and hatred for black Americans. The amount of interesting facts I have learned in the past couple of years has lead me to begin my journey on becoming more and more educated on the Civil War. I wanted to choose a good book about the civil war and I had always heard about the Bruce Catton series of books. My father told me that A Stillness at Appomattox is his favorite Civil War book, so I decided to give it a try myself. I wanted to start with this book because of the great ratings that this book
