The general argument made by author Alix Stigler in his work, Struggle For Smarts? How Eastern And Western Cultures Tackle Learning, is that Japanese students try harder and have a better work ethic than american students. More specifically, he argues that people who are naturally smart do not struggle as much as people who struggle to understand what is being taught.
He also writes that the western culture comes from a stricter background. In their culture they can only have 1 child per family due to overpopulation. In turn, it puts more pressure on the child to do better in school. This also means the parents put more pressure on the child to do their best. In my view, Stigler is wrong and right, because what took americans a few minutes to figure out and was impossible to complete, they just moved on with their life. The problem took the japanese the entire hour and they worked on it the entire hour. More specifically I believe that there are valid points about both cultures and about how hard they work. For example, in most japanese classrooms teachers give out harder tasks than what is required or what is needed and Stigler believes that more classrooms in the states need more struggle in order to overcome problems easier in their life or at their jobs. Although Stigler may believe that are culture could use more academic success and stricter about school work, which is not totally true about every school, every school has different circumstances for instance the current school I attend has a great academic system and great teachers that push kids for greatness.
