Ani DiFranco’s poem, “Adam and Eve,” relies strongly on allusions, metaphor, poetic tone, and symbolism to describe a sinful act of lust between a man and a woman. There are indications of comparisons and contradictions to another poem, “Adam and Eve,” written by Marjorie Pickthall. Even though the two poems have the same title and symbolize good and evil, they are written in two different ways. In other words, both poems display a different point of view, which in turn gives different meaning. The poem written by Pickthall, expresses sin that was committed, but was followed through righteousness by adhering to moral beliefs, and the poem written by DiFranco, is written with such lustful deceit that has no values. Several elements are demonstrated throughout this poem. The importance of allusion is to reference the biblical aspect of the true Adam and Eve, which in turn gives this poem its own meaning. For example, in lines 7-8, “but i know it’s because you think you're adam / and you think I'm eve,” (1005) represents the Adam and Eve referenced in the Bible, genesis 2. The author used this allusion to depict Adam as the seducer and Eve as the enticer, but the sin was acted out mutually. The beauty of a woman was crafted because GOD knew man could not live alone. The use of poetic tone is expressed through the greatness of mercy that GOD has instilled into these two human beings and the life they have chosen to live. This poem indicates contentment that Eve portrayed with living life by the ways of the world, so she could satisfy her selfish ways. Throughout the poem, desirable cravings overcomes her inner ability to have self-control showing her weakness with the devil.
