When America was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, the Spaniards started to establish settlements the following year. However, natives were already living in the area. Nevertheless, problems started to arise. Since natives were already living in the area, the Spaniards solution to get rid of them was to either kill or enslave them. The natives were put into encomiendas and treated atrociously. Individuals began to speak out about this situation and one of them was Bartolome de las Casas. Las Casas solution to fixing the situation was by sending a letter to the prince. The letter he sent is named “A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies.” The purpose of the letter was to convince the prince into ending the genocide.
