Summary Of Chiam Potock's The Chosen

I believe that Chiam Potock aspired to touch on several aspects of friendship in his book The Chosen. He wanted us to perceive how they started as enemies. At the baseball game they were physically fighting one another. They were antagonists and wanted nothing to do with each other. But then Potock illustrated that later as the two boys grew they became friends and not just any sort of friends, they became best friends. I believe that Chiam Potock was presenting a message of friendship. He wanted us to realize how friends can get going as enemies, they can grow, and finally can form something greater than what they began with.

To begin, I believe that Potok aspired for us to notice that friends can start out as enemies. That is precisely what took place in the book. ““I told my team we’re going to kill you apikorsim this afternoon.” He said it flatly, without a trace of expression in his voice. (Chapter 1) page 18” in this quote, we see that Danny is referring to Rueven as an apikorsim, which is offensive in the Jewish religion. Rueven did not appreciate that and said sarcastically “sure”. Friendships grow with help. After the baseball game Danny was transported to the Hospital. Discerning this, Rueven went to him immediately, to make certain he was all right. That is how friendships develop. After Danny had seen how much Rueven worried, he perceived how nice of a person Rueven was. The friendship grew even more and now they were talking. “Danny was looking at me, his sculpted face wearing a serious expression. “Don’t you have any brothers or sisters?” he asked. “No. My mother died soon after I was born.” “I’m sorry to hear that.”(Chapter 7) page 116” they are even closer now and have grown to recognize each other as something exponentially greater than they saw at the base ball
