“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction short story about a fourteen-year-old boy who learns to live with his Aunt after his parents deaths. In the beginning, Michael dislikes living with his Aunt and he won’t admit it. Also in the beginning he gets in a lot of spats with his Aunt Esther. Soon, Michael brings home a crab. The next day when Michael came home, his Aunt was in his room and said, “I think Sluggo needs a girlfriend, lets go to the pet store.” In the end, Aunt Esther says something about his mom and he does not like it. This is what she said, “What do you think your mother would say if she saw the mess we got ourselves into?” This story shows that Michael had to go through his layers of grieving before he could be ready for new relationships.
The first reason why Michael misses his parents is because he can smell his mother’s talc powder she uses. In paragraph 62, the author says, “Michael sensed a familiar smell, his mother’s talc powder in the air.” In paragraph 63, the character looks at his Aunt and smells it from her direction like she was wearing it. This means that he misses his mom and that scent that he smells reminded him of his mom. This proves that Michael misses his mom because when he smelled he looked sad. This proves that he misses his mom because he does not want to hear or well he does not want to be reminded of
