Erich Maria Remarque's All quiet on the western front portays the changes and horrors that occurred in a average German soldier's life during World War 1. Paul and his friends enlisted in the German army after being persuaded by their teacher, Kantorek who spoke of patriotism and heroism to their country. Paul didn't realize how much the war could destroy him mentally and physically. Paul wasn't able to relate to his family because they don't realize that war is romanticized. They don't understand the horrors, brutality and cruel reality of the war and the actual battle field. He doesn't seem to fit in with civilization anymore. Paul went into the war thinking of all the fame and glory he can earn from fighting, but he was faced with fear and despair. His bunks are in a small, filthy space that is infested with obnoxious lice and mice that ate his food . Some nights the soldiers went to sleep on an empty stomach because they weren't fed or there wasn't enough food to go around. Hospitals were crowded and unsanitary. The wounded usually die due to lack of equipment and treatments. As the war went on, he and his comrades were stripped of their humanity and were killing and fighting everyday just to survive and live for another day. He found a group of friends that shared a strong bond with him but as the war raged on, they slowly die one by one right before his eyes. War brings suffering to everyone who is
