In this essay, I will be talking about Garp’s attendance to his mother’s memorial service. His attendance was controversial to many fans of Jenny Fields. I will explain my opinion and views on this topic in this essay. I will be writing about the effect the memorial service had on Garp and explaining my views on the subject. Garp’s attendance to his mother’s memorial service was very controversial. Garp wanted to attend his mother’s service but he was not advised to because it was a “feminist funeral”, even though Jenny did not want a funeral, and Garp wasn’t very well-liked at the time of the event. I think that Garp’s attendance to the funeral should very easily be justified. He should be able to attend a service for his own mother that was assassinated. I feel that there being no men allowed at the service is completely ridiculous. Garp is finally freed of his mother trying to control his life. Although Garp like his mother’s help throughout his life there were multiple times in the story where Garp would have prefered to make some of his decisions by himself with Jenny telling him what to do. I think that Garp was upset by the passing of his mother but on the other hand he almost had a weight lifted off his shoulders. Garps life would change in multiple ways following Jenny’s death. Garp has to do everything himself without his mother. His life also changes when he meets Ellen James on the plane leaving Jenny’s memorial service. Garp meets the leader of the activists that he despises and finds out that they have a common interest in that and become good
