Throughout George Washington’s presidency, he learned valuable insight on how to run America. When Washington became president, he set precedents for future presidents to follow his example. After two terms he decided not to run for a third and left America with some advice from his own experiences as president. In his farewell address, Washington advised the Americans to keep their country united, stay neutral when being involved with other nation’s disputes, and to maintain lines of equal power in the government to avoid tyranny. In the beginning of Washington’s letter, he wrote that he was not going to be running for a third term. Before he left office, Washington informed the people that there was going to be an election for a new president and that he was providing them with insight for how to handle things in the future. Washington explains, “ The period for a new election of a citizen to administer the executive government of the united states being not far from distant…,”(paragraph 1). With a new president, trust has to come as well. Seeing Hamilton and Jefferson argue about every situation advised him to include a section of his address about a keeping the government united. Washington states, “ The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you,” (paragraph 2). If the government is not unified, it will fall apart and the nation will be no more. The people are key to keeping a unified government because they make the nation. With the divide in his cabinet Washington took precautions, by writing about a unified government in his farewell address, to make sure the divide would not progressively get
