The novel “Song of the Humming Bird” by Graciela Limon is about a monk who meets a native woman in the convent in which he is to be the new confessor. The native woman shares her story about how she lived through the invasion of the Spanish and other personal struggles. I think the most important points in this novel is how the Spanish took over the city of Tenochtitlan, stripped the natives of their culture and identities, how the Spanish shoved their religion down the native’s throats. Though most importantly, how Huitzitzilin was able to change the mind of the stubborn priest with her story. I think the author does a great job expressing the endurance the native woman had to go through all that. Everything about the novel seemed very real, it felt as if I was there, sitting by this woman hearing her story. Huitzitzilin keeps questioning his believes and even gets him to forgive her after she confesses that she killed a man. Soon the priest realizes something within himself “His mind went deeper into his spirit until it became clear to him that it was not absolution or even mercy that she had expected of him, but understanding of her life, of her people, and of their beliefs.” I was fond of this moment in the book because it felt good knowing he understood what her people went through and how unjust captain Cortés and his men were. With how things have been recently, people being so ignorant on the racial issues we still have to fix, I felt very hopeful with the ending of the book. I wish for something to move people now, on the same page, so we can work towards a better
