In the short story, "Hills like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway, the introduction of the story we are an interesting description of the setting before we are introduced to anyone. I believed that Hemingway did this to have the reader transported into the scene. The setting plays a significant part within the text. Additionally, Hemingway never gives his character’s names in the work and are simply known as the American, and the girl. Due to the lack of names a reader can place themselves within the position of either character.
