Cold Mountain revolves around the story of a confederate soldier returning to North Carolina. Throughout Inman’s journey home, he told many people about his time in the war. The conditions of the war were kept very poorly yet he survived out of the thousands of lives that perished. Twice as many Civil War soldiers died of disease from bullets, shells and bayonets. In addition to the wounds and injuries, soldiers from the North and South also had infestations of body lice in their clothing and bedding from constantly being outside and poor sanitary conditions made this worse. These are just the few things that defined the living conditions during the Civil War. Each soldier is equipped with all of the supplies needed during battle. Confederate Soldiers need: a bayonet, rifle musket, knapsack, canteen, haversack, bayonet scabbard, brogans (type of shoes worn),blanket, cartridge box, frock coat, cap pouch, slouch hat, British Enfield rifle, army-issue shell jacket, blanket roll, canteen and gum blanket. All of the equipment that hinders or weighs down the soldier would be thrown out. The appearance and equipment used varies greatly between each state but a standard frock coat, trousers and forage cap is worn by most men in war. The soldiers shared the core values of courage, honor, and understanding of manliness along with the strong religious beliefs that faith would protect them on the battlefield.
