In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid” Carr is trying to make a point that the use of the internet is causing a human to become less and less smart and more and more robotic. Carr is showing this by using many theorists, bloggers and writers to prove his case. Carr begins the article by talking about his own brain, how he seems to be more anxious when there is nothing to do. He talks about how much information is at our fingertips when it comes to using the internet as he states, “Hyperlinks don’t merely point to related work; they propel you toward them.” (Pg2 Para4) Carr then starts to support his theory by giving us a lot of studies by theorist such as Marshall McLuhan, who talks about her lack of being able to store information. There was also a blogger named Scott Karp who says he “stopped reading books altogether.” (Pg2 Para6). Lastly, another blogger Bruce Friedman who said he “Totally lost the ability to read and retain information from larger readings.” (Pg2 Para7) He then begins to start talking about Friedrich Nietzsche who used a typewriter to learn touch typing to be able to continue writing even after he lost his vision. Then comes Carr’s attack on Google, According to Carr google is the “Internet’s high church.” (Pg6 Para28) Where they gather search data and such to grow the algorithm of the internet. To make the “Perfect search engine.” (Pg7 Para29) Sergey Brin and Larry Page who are the founders of Google want to push it further they want to make our brains more Artificial (a smarter brain so to speak). Carr tells us about how the internet is made to collect profit from our search actions
