After an extensive amount of research, historian Lewis Sorley penned an exhilarating literary work entitled A Better War. In his novel, Sorley provided a detailed analysis of General Creighton Abrams’ hegemony. Ultimately, Sorley asserted that Abrams reconstructed the war approach. The previous commander, William Westmorland attempted to fight the war by enforcing a massive army search and destroy policy. However, despite his good intentions, Commander Westmorland failed. Therefore, his command was reassigned to General Creighton Abrams. Unlike Westmorland, General Abrams created a strategy that involved striking communism with a series of little, focused missions. General Creighton Abrams assumed the role of Deputy Commander in early June of 1967. (Location 218) As Deputy Commander, Abrams’ top priority was to strategically monitor and lead the American army as the Vietnam War progressed. With the progression of the war, America experienced several challenges in Vietnam. (Location 241) Chief MACV Commander, Westmorland was held responsible for America’s problems. He requested a large number of military enforcement, and President Johnson denied his request. Instead of granting Westmorland the troops that he requested, Johnson elected to minify the war.
