In “Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments”, American founding father, James Madison argues that a strong and truly free society must maintain a strong separation between church and state (religion and politics). Throughout the essay Madison set his point by saying that the only position that civil government can take towards religion is “non-cognizance”, which means not recognizing. He provides 15 reasons for separation between church and state.
One of the reasons is that “we hold it for a fundamental and undeniable truth”, that religion or the duty that we owe to the creator of the world, God, and the way that we full fill our duty, can only be directed through reason and awareness not through force or violence (Madison
