Chapter 12 of Mark Hutter’S Experiencing cities is all about Genders in cities. This chapter immediately dives head first into the male dominated world of designing of cities and those professions. As well as a very obvious bias towards men in that field. It was discussed in the chapter that this idea and bias comes from the long standing stereotype that a woman's place is in the home cooking and taking care of the kids. But this chapter is not set in stone in its ideas. Discussed along with women's place in the work force is the gay and lesbian community as well as gender harassment in public environments. In this section it was discussed how for a long the time the gay community was frowned upon in the urban setting and over time it has become a mixed feel. The Aha moment that came to my attention was that just as everything else is progressing in our societies, the way gays are viewed are also progressing in a positive direction. Like every ethnicity, they tend to naturally segregate themselves and while the gay community isn’t a race they do so as well. In urban communities they like to build their own enclave. 2 well known urban gay enclaves would be, like I previously mentioned in my first chapter, is the Castro in San Fransisco and Greenwich Village in New York City. This section went into great length about the views of the gay community, which is something most people are already very aware about. But something that was discussed, along with the evolution of how the gay community is perceived is how the gay community has changed the cities in which its extremely prevalent. For example, in San Fransisco the gay community has become a main contributor of art in the city, which has improved the artistic perspective of its cityscapes. The point i’m trying to make is that as the times have changed and people have become more open and accepting these cities with vibrant gay communities thrive and improve because of
