The debate on advancing technology being positive or negative effect on society has been a controversial topic. Twohy, for example, displays how technology makes us less social in his cartoon. On the other hand McGonigal displays a more positive effect technology has in her book, Reality is Broken. With this in mind, it is clear that McGonagal would disagree with the claim Twohy presents in his cartoon. In the book, McGonigal explains that technology, specifically video games, helps people cope with a flawed reality. She states, “The truth is: in today’s society, computer and video games are fulfilling genuine human needs that the real world is currently unable to satisfy (6).” McGonigal presented an argument displaying how it is not technology, specifically video games, that’s at fault, but rather “the real world” is at fault for failing to satisfy human needs. This depicts a fat father figure not truly caring about spending quality time with his son, based on him not facing the boy all the way and didn’t bother to get up. The son too, doesn’t even look at the father, depicting his lack of care towards his father. Demonstrating how both are so invested in their technology, that they barely acknowledge each other. Twohy then writes, “Wanna toss the ol’ virtual pigskin?” Clearly making a satire of the stereotypical father and son relationship. He shows that because of society’s investment in technology, relationships, like the father and son, are being tarnished. Instead of the stereotypical father-son activity of football, Twohy sarcastically has the father and son play a virtual game of football instead.
