The poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, is described by Theodore Roethke of how a young boy or himself was abused and beaten by his father. Within the poem Roethke describes with imagery of how it felt for a young boy or himself to be treated as a non-important human. It also explains how a drunk father becomes so intoxicated that he is unaware of his actions which are being taken out on his son. Since the father is so intoxicated he becomes unfocused of what his actions are causing him to do during the time he is intoxicated, the father starts to become abusive. The author expresses the feelings of the young boy, the mother and the father. For the young boy his feelings are being represented as being scared, in pain, and confused by the actions that his father is making towards him. The mother’s feelings toward the incident is explained as being scared but not concerned of what is happening to her son. In the poem the author writes about how “my mother’s countenance/Could not unfrowned itself”, explaining that the only thing that the mother did was demonstrate a facial expression which is indicated as being displeased of what is occurring to her son. But instead of doing anything to protect her son, she is viewed as just watching the incident happen. The father’s feelings towards what he is doing towards his son is described as him being unaware and unconcerned of what is happening.
