In the novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry the protagonist Annemarie finds her mother injured on the steps at the end of Chapter 12. At the beginning of Chapter 13, Annemarie finds the packet that Peter had given to Mr. Rosen. I can tell the Annemarie’s mother knew what was in the packed because of the way that her mother reacted when Annemarie asked "Do you know what it is?" She “didn't answer.” and “her face was stricken” (pg 120). Looking nervous and avoiding the question suggests that Annemarie’s mother does know what is in the packet. I think that Mamma did not tell Annemarie why the packet was important because she wanted her to be credible when she said that she did not know what was in the packet or what it was for.
