In the poem “On the Subway” by Sharon Olds, we can imply multiple things such as the main point of the poem which is the difference between the narrator and the passenger next to them, which by the tone of the poem makes it sound like the narrator is a female. We can see some contrast between both portraits in the poem and insights that the narrator has come to as a result of her experience riding the subway. The poem starts off by the narrator studying the passenger next to her. She analyzes him, paying attention to little details such as how his shoelaces are tied.
