In 1561 a young Native American boy named Paquiquineo, was kidnapped by the

Chesapeake also, known as the Spanish explorers. He was taken away from America to

Spain. He met the King of Spain, Phillip II and while Paquiquineo was in Spain he was

unwilling to let anyone make him change the religion he believed in. Ironically he wish to go back home lead him to New Mexico where he than converted into a Christian. Paquiquineo captors wrote a letter to king Phillip about his journey coming from Spain to Mexico. Although it’s hard to understand what was the point of taking a Native American to Spain if it wasn’t going to benefit anyone. The reason behind this was because the North had more farms than anything and the south had huge plantations and slave owners need slaves for cheap labor. They needed slaves for cheap labor that way they could save more money and they also knew that colonist wouldn’t do it. Therefore a petition was handed out by group of eight slaves to free to free them in Massachusetts but than failed. These slaves believed in “All men are born free and equal” and they knew the slave owners were violating the Article I of the Massachusetts Constitution. Although they couldn’t do much because they were slaves they still stood up for themselves because they knew all man are crated equal. They didn’t understand why they couldn’t be free and have all the freedom like the white men did. It was unfair to these slaves because the slaveowners treated them differently because of their skin color. These eight slaves wanted to let the people who turn down the petition that the slavery life “Deprived of every social privilege” and being a slave and being looked down on was probably worse than nonexistence. Luckily Elizabeth Freeman also known as Mum Bett was in favor of the slave petition, which the Massachusetts supreme judicial court ruled that Massachusetts constitution prohibited slavery because they knew it was wrong to have these young slaves enslaved.
