The story “Perfect Stranger” by Amy Casil is a first person story set in future with three important characters; the characters are Gary, Carolyn, and Denny. The main character Gary and his wife Carolyn trying to heal their son Denny through the use of genetic modification, yet over the years Gary feel’s that his son is a stranger. The genetic modification started with a heart problem that Denny was born with that would be fatal, and then the modification moves to Denny needing help in math much to Gary’s dismay, Denny then starts to gain weight due to Denny’s new modification. Even though Gary hates all of the quick fixes the modifications, Carolyn gets Gary to allow Denny’s next genetic modification to get his metabolism fixed along with other various modifications such as being taller, more athletic, and stronger, but the most prominent being that Denny’s eyes are now blue instead of brown (Casil 1265-74). “Perfect Stranger” is a story that explains the cycle of racism and bullying in modern culture through symbolism.
