Life Questions With Anthony Kiedis
Anthony Kiedis is the lead singer of the punk-rock live band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Scar Tissue is his autobiography, where he explains how he was able to become the person he is nowadays, how he overcame drug abuse, and how he keeps doing what he loves the most with his best friends Mike (who then acquired the nickname “Flea”), Josh, and Chad, which is creating music that can change the hearts and minds of many. Even though throughout the book he spoke with detail and accuracy, there were some questions that came up as I discovered more about his formation. One thing I have noticed about these people is that they seem to be musical identities. On page 80, Anthony talks about his first time doing music onstage, where they performed “Out in L.A.” at the Rhythm Lounge. Another example where I questioned this is when Jill Vernon, Kiedis’ English teacher told him after reading his journal, “you have a special gift for writing, and I think you should be aware and do something with it.”(29) Just like Anthony’s teacher thought he had a special skill, people in my family tell me that I was born with the talent of drawing, but is there really such thing? Or was John Locke's’ Tabula Rasa theory correct? Possessing the knowledge of this question could and would not only break many of the philosophies set by our greatest intellectuals, but also give us, as human beings, a sense of what areas of skill we should work on and develop.
