James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” has been a typical representation of life in Harlem in the mid 20th century. The story develops from the narrator’s point of view of learning about Sonny’s drug abuse to Sonny himself discovering his love of music. Sonny’s Blues is written in order to represent Sonny and the narrator’s attempts at “escaping” the ghettos of Harlem.
