It is a typical Thursday; Jill is hurrying down to the elementary school to pick up her children, Sydney and Josh. Josh is a active fourth grader who loves to play sports and watch tv. Sydney is in the second grade and is a little shy. On the way home Josh tells his mom a story of how during P.E. he made an amazing shot to win the game. Sydney is quietly reading her book about an Indian princess and wild horses. She always likes books about being free and riding horses under the sun. Jill tells the children if they behave while she does a few errands, they can go to McDonald’s and get a sundae and Happy Meal. They finally arrive home a little late because of hectic traffic. The dome is pumped full of clean air through a revolutionary system that separates the oxygen from the water. It has many levels and a freeway system to enable people to get around. Their house like many others is surrounding the central dome. The entire house is made of very heavy metal to prevent cracks that would be devastating, and any windows and door have to be perfectly sealed. However, with a lack of job experience under water Phil found the best job possible. In the years following the war the government came up with two plans to save the people, who were becoming more sickly every day. One was to live in the ocean and work began to build this giant city. The other was to live on Mars which was already established as a functional colony, they would just have to expand the colony to accommodate the increase in population. Jill and Phil were recently married and planning their family when the proposal was announced. Jill was strongly opposed to living in the ocean because she was always scared of the mysterious and dangerous creatures in it. She also was opposed as a result of the city having to be built so deep to escape the radiation that the sun would no longer be visible. Phil encouraged her; however, pointing out that the trip to Mars took four years which would interfere with their plans for a family and if the Earth ever became stable again they or their posterity would never be able to return from Mars. Jill finally agreed and was glad enough because unfortunately even with the combined space on both locations many people would be left behind to
