The book NewJack: Guarding Sing Sing by Ted Conover is a profound book to read it gave me a great glimpse of how the prison life really is and how you can put yourself in comparing how Hollywood movies or TV shows displays them. Conover put in details what a real life in prison are for example the cursing, violence, cultural shock of prison, moral and ethical dilemmas, and the relationship between the guards and inmates. What applauds me is that I thought the Rikers Island was the only maximum-security prison that contains the violence inmates. Rikers Island is considering well-known prison in New York that can be brought up in many topics from my Criminal Justice courses to the media. Reading about the Sing Sing Correctional Facility I was surprise that there was history behind it since 1826 and that: a work crew of convicts, camping on the riverbank, actually induced to build their own prison (p.3).” The similarity with Sing Sing and Rikers Island have to deal with the violence and what the correctional have to put up every single day they clock-in and …show more content…
The statement was “ Hey Shorty,” “ Yo, Uncle Tom,” “ Black Bitch- yeah you Come suck my dick!” (p.29). Hearing these comments was disgusting and something that I cannot place myself in at all. The environment had negative emotional effects for me to face if I was in a real life prison working, as a guard and I would think how would this affect me I can’t get mad or be malicious towards the inmates. I couldn’t grasp how Conover actually apply and work there, but now I have a clearer knowledge and understanding it no matter what job you apply you will eventually face the pros and cons it just depends how you will be able take it and how you treat others from each situation you will
