How To Help An Alcoholic’s (2014) documentary took the audience through the journey of Ryan, a young man who is suffering from what appeared to be a very serious alcohol dependence. As he described, he typically has 3 pints of alcohol on a daily basis, which is 18 times the legal limit and more than the threshold for what is considered a heavy drinker for men. Our text classify heavy drinkers as a male who consumes more than 4 drinks a day and a women who consumes consumes more than 3 drinks a day (223). Unfortunately Ryan is above that classification. The video touched on various important topics and themes relating to alcoholism. On such important topic was how chronic alcoholism affects the abuser and those around them. His family had various disagreements over how best to help Ryan and his grandfather was accused of being an enabler for giving him money to buy alcohol. An enabler is an individual whose behavior consciously or unconsciously encourages another to continue in a pattern of drug or alcohol abuse (224). Subsequently, because those around him recognize that Ryan is highly dependent on alcohol they encourage him to quit and try to help him manage his consumption. This included taking him to a facility in Dallas to conduct medical testing in order to determine how much damage his alcoholism has caused. While at the facility the physicians confirmed a plethora of damages his alcoholism has cause on his body. These damages include liver damage, pancreatic damage, and cardiovascular damage. From Ryan’s description of pain that hinders him from eating it is evident that he was probably suffering from alcoholic cirrhosis, a disease that involves scarring and deterioration of the liver due to chronic alcohol abuse along with (227). Upon going over his results and informing how dire his circumstances are, Ryan agreed to enter treatment where he died a few weeks
