Over the last few decades, sharks have mistakenly been viewed in the public eye as man-eating monsters. Not long ago, sharks were but a mere mystery to people. It was only until recently that humans started researching these animals. Once people began looking into sharks, the media began to paint an awful picture about how dangerous they were and how they should be feared. Publications and movies were released that brought the terror of shark attacks to the general public. The typical portrayal of sharks in the media and in entertainment is one of glamorization due to the nature of humans. People were not always afraid of sharks. Nobody had ever really associated sharks with attacks. It was only when the movie Jaws was released that humans really began to fear the terror of a shark attack. The movie was based off of Peter Benchley’s novel about a shark that terrorized the beaches of a small community. While shark attacks do happen and they can be gruesome, the media tends to only focus on the details that will grab more people’s attention, rather than reporting the facts (shark project). The media will use expressions such as “shark infested waters” a lot even though the water is their territory and people are the ones infesting it. evidence for this statement : count th number of times that a certain phrase appears in a news report, vs another phrase that appears in the same report. If the news outlets only focus on the horrors of sharks whenever an attack occurs, then it is safe to assume people are going to develop a fear of them , even though the likelihood of ever being attacked by a shark is really
