The Warramunger's War by Greg Kater
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
In 1941 British and Australian troops were fighting Germans and pro-Nazi Vichy French in Syria and Lebanon. Jamie from Wales and Jacko from the Australian Warramunga Aboriginal tribe met when Jamie was under sniper attack. They developed a friendship and their talents initiated this enjoyable suspense.
The characters were realistic, unique, and easy to recognize despite alliteration of some of their names; Jamie, Jim, Johnny, Jock, Jake, and John. The author confused two of the characters in one scene. '“They want to initiate you as a true friend ….,” said Jamie.”’ Jamie was being initiated. Jacko would have explained the procedure to Jamie. The specialized talents of the people who assisted them in their search for war criminals enhanced the story. Quotes from one of the Warramunga women in her native language were only translated once. Some of what she said was decipherable but much was not. Jamie and Jacko used inventive methods and encountered problems that were believably solved in their search for war criminals. An example is, “…the curious layered hill that gave Wave Hill Station its name…” How many layers and colors? Were the layers horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or a mixture? What was the texture? Another example is the setting at the café where they frequently met, the direction from where people arrived, and their complaints about the coffee. It looked as though the scene was copied and pasted whenever they were having a meeting of this type. The team discussed classified information in public areas where they were likely to be overheard.
