Summary: Should Congress Have Term Limits

In a book, called Breach of Trust: How Washington Turns Outsiders Into Insiders, that Senator Tom Coburn wrote the following statement:“The longer a politician bears power, the more he is controlled by that power.” In that book he discusses why and how congressman become career politicians which is a reason he supports term limits, as well as other reforms.In order for Congress to have a constitutional convention over this two-thirds or thirty-four states must be in agreement on a having it or requesting it. So far there are twenty-eight states already proposing the convention and two others are planning to do so as well, making it so they will only need four others. The Congress needs to have term limits in order to get fresh ideas to the government and to possibly prevent prejudice. There are various reasons that positions in our government should have term limits, one of those reasons being so there are fresh ideas in the government. The presidency has a term limit of two four year terms, so what makes it so people who serve in Congress are there for an unlimited time? By having …show more content…
My rebuttal to this is actually pretty simple, if we had term limits then we would get people with a fresh mindset, new ideas, a new way of looking at things, and people are not all going to be going out at the same time. If we were to continue not having term limits then, of course, you have the usual problem of corruption, but as well as the problem of prejudices. When you have some people in there longer people may automatically go with them even though the person who just got there had some great points. However by having term limits, you will have both people with experience and people with brand new ideas and the fresh outlook, also people won’t be as stressed or burnt-out from decision making because they are not doing it as
