Should parents who abuse their children go to jail
An estimated 702,000 children were confirmed by the child protective services as being victims of abuse and neglect in 2014 (“Child abuse and neglect: consequences” 1). A large number of the parents have little consequences for the abuse. However, the children are scarred for life and will have negative effects on their physical and mental health. Neglect, physical abuse, custodial interferences and sexual abuse are types of child maltreatment that can lead to poor physical and mental health well into adulthood (“Child abuse and neglect: consequences’ 1).The negative effects on the children could be deadly and change their whole life. Studies show that approximately 1,580 children died from abuse from abuse and neglect in the past year across the country (“Child abuse and neglect: consequences” 1). If the parent would have been arrested or taken away from their kids the children would still be alive. Children that are abused are more likely to abuse drugs and/or alcohol (“what are the effects of child abuse” 1). This means that the risk of the children to overdose or get alcohol poisoning will increase. The reasons the children do the drugs or consume alcohol is because they do not want to be in pain anymore. The child would rather die than to live another day with the abuser. Those with a history of child abuse and neglect are 1.5 times more likely to use illicit drugs (“child abuse and neglect: consequences” 1). Children that are abused use them drugs to try and help them from all the misery and pain. If these children were taken away from the abuser they would not want to take their life and would live a better life. Approximately 5 children die every day because of child abuse (“11 facts about child abuse” 1). If we were to do something about the abuse a lot of children would still be alive. The children need to be taken away from the abuser in order to have a better life and they will not need to abuse drugs or alcohol to cope with the pain from the
