In the earlier days of psychological studies being conducted there many times when the study was considered to be harmful to individuals. There was no agency that would considered the psychological damage that was being considered during the experiments. Though in time the ethical treatment of individuals during these studies was being questioned and thus leading to protection of them in the studies. Individuals where told of what the experiment was examining and ensuring that they understand the process as well as letting them know that they do not need to participate. The MKUltra project did none of these reassurances as it needed to be done in secrecy.
Since the 1950s, the CIA had been trying to develop sophisticated mind control programs the well-known being project MKUltra. Project MKUltra existed from 1953-1964 that used a variety of drugs and other chemicals. The MKUltra program was conducted during the Cold War era as the government paranoia of infiltrating spies. During the programs investigation, Gottlieb acknowledged that the agency administered LSD and other drugs to unsuspecting subjects of different social standing (Holly, 2005). The testing happened within social settings. During the investigation it was revealed that universities, hospitals and prison had conducted some experiments. There were no medical personal during administration of the drug or one to observe the effect. Some of the side effects in subjects include them being ill for hours even days and some had even endured long-term effects.
