John lives in a place called puritania where everyone lives in fear of a landlord that no one has ever seen. John starts having dreams and visions of a magnificent island that he continues to try to find. Eventually he thinks lust and sex are this “amazing island” that’s going to bring him joy but he realizes that lust wasn’t it so he continuous to search for the island. John meets a man who tells him the landlord most certainly is not real because no one has ever seen him, and john feels relieved. Along the way John is captured by a giant who makes everything he looks at transparent which causes john to not be able to see his insides and the giant then tries to tell john that man is nothing but an empty body. A man rescues john and leads him to the Grand Canyon where he meets mother kirk. Mother kirk tells john no one can carry him across the Grand Canyon except for her but instead john goes around the long way. John goes north where he meets many men who help him along the way such as, Mr. sensible and Mr. Humanist. John learns he cannot go north anymore so he turns south where he eventually gets to the house of wisdom where he learns about the fallacies of many different philosophies. When john leaves the house of wisdom he is met by a man who tells him that he must either accept grace or he will die. John accepts grace and he realizes that he needs to acknowledge gods existence. Although some readers may not be able to discern which characters represent what, if you do pick up on his symbolism it’s quite interesting. Even though I enjoyed the book I would probably suggest the original “a pilgrim’s progress” instead of this version simply because it’s much easier to understand. Because I’m a fairly strong reader I found this book enjoyable and I thought it was fascinating how he used these characters to portray philosophies and ideas. Overall it’s a good book but it can be a little hard to understand at some
