In the story The true confessions of Charlotte Doyle, by Avi, the theme of the novel is “Don’t give up even in the biggest steps of your life.” A quote that also represent the theme and book is, Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction, ends up being the biggest step of your life. One scene in the book is when Zacharie gave a dirk to Charlotte. A dirk is a small knife ( it’s kinda like a pocket knife. He gave the dirk to Charlotte for protection. That shows a huge step in the book because, now she knows that at one point she might be fighting for her life on the ship ride home. In the book the dirk falls in many wrong hands. This is one big part of the book that happened to charlotte.

She went to knock on the cabin door where does men stay, Fisk (A character in the book) opens the door and show her (Charlotte) a chest. She opens the chest and in it was a pistol and other things in it. She realizes that no man besides Captain Jaggery can have a pistol on the ship. This supports the quote and theme because this is a big step for charlotte because she now realizing that the crew is trying to attack Captain Jaggery, and have revenge on
