Modernism characteristic, quotidian, which means the everyday experiences of life, plays role in the novel. The story faces problems that some of us face everyday. Like loving someone who doesn't love you back. The characters go to Spain to watch live bullfighting and to partying. Every character has problems throughout the story.
The story starts off with Jake Barnes and Robert Cohn. Cohn has a controlling girlfriend and wants to get away from it by traveling with Jake to South America. “I never met any one of his friends who remembered Cohn.” This quote from the novel describes the type of guy he is. He was passive and struggled with feeling differently from everyone else. His differences with his friends, with him being the only Jew and non veteran only adds to his insecurities. Cohn connects with many people feelings in today's society. Almost everyone feels insecure and acts out just like Robert did when he started to box at Princeton. His insecurities take control of him and he makes mistakes that he regrets. Although he might not be our favorite character most everyone connects with him.
