Sunrise Over Fallujah; Robin Becomes Birdy

In the historical fiction book Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers, the narrator Birdy overcomes the tough environment and hardships of war, which in the end, changes his outlook on war and the way he thinks in general. He confronts death, his feelings about his father, and being the hand that kills. His name is Robin Perry, his experiences of the war changes his way of thinking and the wisdom he gains through that experience shapes the work as a whole.
In the midst of a war, Birdy experiences death. In the beginning, his division is sent to do a quick search of all of the houses in the premise while offering first aid and gaining support from the Shiite people. Everybody is on high alert

Birdy’s group is sent out for a special mission thats goal is to “rescue” the children that are kidnapped, hopefully gaining the trust of the people who might be involved in knowing the location of the detonators. It is more of a return mission because the Special Ops guys (aka the “Hoodlums”) are the ones that kidnap the children. When they take the kids back, the Iraqis have three boxes that are supposedly filled with detonators. Then, shots rang out. In all of the chaos, Jonesy saves an injured blind boy, saving his life even when they were supposed to abandon ship. In the process Jonesy gets shot in the neck, a critical injury. From the very beginning of the book it is clear that Birdy is not a very religious person. But in this moment he says, “It had been so long since I’ve prayed. . . God, please don’t let him die. Not Jonesy, God. please.” (272). And for a while, he ignores what he is doing and what must be a throbbing pain in his leg from being shot, and focuses on his friend.
