Beowulf is an epic literature because it consists of a hero’s courageous deed, it tells of a heroic protagonist, and it features appearances of supernatural forces. Beowulf tells of a Geat prince who sailed with an army from Sweden on a quest to help the neighboring country of Denmark. The quest is to defeat a demonic creature named Grendel who has been killing Hrothgar's people. Beowulf has superhuman strengths and is courageous enough to take on and defeat Grendel, his mother, and the great dragon.
