In Superman and Me, Sherman Alexie uses literary devices to convey the theme of, people must not give up, they must have perseverance. The must work hard to break any barriers or obstacles. People can do it.
For example, when he was recalling his childhood times, Alexie said, “I read...I read… I read with equal joy and desperation. I loved books, but also knew that love had only one purpose. I was trying to save my life.” This statement demonstrates that while Alexie is talking about his childhood experience as and Indian child, he uses the literary device of repetition. He uses repetition because by repeating, “I read”, multiple times throughout the paragraph to make the thought of him working really hard to overcome these stereotypical barriers very clear. Then he explains that his effort are for only one purpose, to save his life. So Alexie uses repetition to convey the theme that people must not give up, they must have perseverance. This evidence illustrates that while Alexie recalls the stereotypes about indian children, he uses diction. Alexie uses diction to define the widely known definition of a dangerous person. He explained how stereotypical it was that smart Indian boy is a dangerous person who is widely feared. Also he wanted to break through these barriers and overcome these obstacles by working hard and refusing to fail because Alexie knew he was smart and that he could do it so, he never gave up.
