Beowulf, the hero of sixth century Scandinavia, and the man of steel himself, Superman, aren’t exactly the first things that come to mind when you think about drawing comparisons. However, through looking at the similarities it also becomes wildly apparent that they may have just as many contrasts. Superman and Beowulf, while an unlikely pair, have certainly opened up a vast discussion when it comes to how the two may relate, or in what areas they may be polar opposites. Heroes are celebrated for coming in all shapes and sizes, but Superman and Beowulf have completely different mindsets and are more different than they are similar. One of Superman’s more notable qualities is the fact that he has always been very humble. His main priority is putting others before himself and worrying about the greater good. Beowulf, on the other hand, seems to have the mentality that he is doing his heroic journeys for trophies on the shelf rather than love for the people. Wulf has also been known to give grand speeches, basically bragging, about his accomplishments. Unlike Beowulf, after Superman does what he feels needed to be done, he “transitions” back into Clark Kent the first chance he gets because rewards aren’t what he seeks. To conclude, it is very obvious that both figures have unquie characteristics and qualities in addition to the features discussed that were similar. Superman is a humble man who hides his super identity behind the mask of Clark Kent, and Beowulf fights monsters and then brags about it in long speeches like it’s going out of style.
