This quote demonstrates the concept that American society is very fixated on having a biological family. Neither of the people mentioned in the quote could have had a child on their own, thus having a surrogate allowed them a way to achieve their dream of having children together. Surrogacy allows couples that could not obtain this goal on their own to have a way to have biological children. In Huxley’s novel Brave New World surrogacy takes on a different image. While the same basic principle of a woman carrying a baby for another person applies elsewhere, in India commercial surrogacy is legal (Saxena). This practice is easily comparable to prostitution in that a woman who is in need of money will metaphorically “sell” her body. She will get paid to carry a baby for another couple. Many laws surround this issue, however, that protect both parties involved (Saxena). “Commercial surrogacy is legal in India, Ukraine, and California” and is illegal in the other US States and England (Saxena). According to Venkatashivareddy, “In UK and Japan, commercial surrogacy arrangements are prohibited by the surrogacy arrangement act 1985”. The idea of surrogacy also poses a great problem for less developed countries. Surrogacy is a very difficult procedure and costs a great deal of money. As pointed out by Venkatashivareddy, “In Russia commercial surrogacy is legal, but lacks medical indication” . Unfortunately for people who want a surrogate in these countries it is not possible because there are just not the resources for it. In this sense, the United States is one of the best places for altruistic surrogacy. Altruistic surrogacy is defined as “practice whereby a woman agrees, for no financial gain, to become pregnant and bear a child for another person or persons to whom she intends to transfer the child’s care at, or shortly after, the child’s birth”
