Susan Bordo, and author born in 1947 in Newark, New Jersey. Susan Bordo attended Carelton University. Bordo is the Singletary Chair in the Humanities and she is also a professor of English and Women's Studies at an University in Kentucky.
In Susan Bordo's article "The Globalization of Eating Disorders", she portrays her view on how media are affecting the way people around the world. People around the world are beginning to base their self esteem off of what society tells them they should be.

Media images are showing men and women who are small in size, tall, healthy, and overall flawless. Bordo states that "... They are never "just pictures," as the fashion magazines continually maintain..." ( Susan Bordo, Pg 17, The Globalization of Eating, The New World Reader)
Bordo uses an informative tone to argue her point to her audience. Bordo's tone make her article very persuasive, it provides several facts behind her statements. The fact that Bordo uses statistics to prove her points in her writing to give her audience valid reason as to why she believes what she believes. Bordo makes her argument more persuasive by arguing that media is a reason behind the insecurities of cultures because she knows that most everyone is able to testify to her beliefs because they have experienced it themselves.
Bordo overall wants the reader to realize that we are dealing with a cultural problem. Bordo says "the sooner we recognize that- and start paying attention to the culture around us..."
