The Big Machine

“I like to imagine that the world is one big machine. You know, machines never have any extra parts. They have the exact number and type of parts they need. So I figure if the entire world is a big machine, I have to be here for some reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too.”Brian Selznick, The Invention of Hugo Cabret. This is an alike message to the one portrayed in The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. In the story Susan Cooper suggests that everyone has a purpose and matters.This is a book about a boy named Will who is destined to save the world from the Dark with his powers. He does this with magical signs and a fair amount of help. She shows this mainly through three characters, Hawkin, John Smith and Will Stanton.

In the story, Hawkin’s destiny plays a pivotal part. Hawkin is a character that was once good, but turned to the dark. He was destined to hold onto the sign of bronze until he could give it to Will. It states in the book “I’ve been carrying it for so long. I don't even remember why.” This suggests that it is not his choice to carry it and this is shown in that he still carries it,

When talking about Will’s powers Merriman, Will’s mentor, says many things along the lines of “you were born to inherit it.” This gives proof to the idea of that Will being the hero or having powers is not just luck, but something that was meant to happen. Furthermore, this could show that some of the events that were created by attributed to Will could also be destiny.It goes on to prove that this is his purpose in “You are the Sign-Seeker. his your destiny.” This is referring to his main task in the book which is the gather the aforementioned Great Signs and showing that not just his powers are meant to be, but his quest also. This could go on to give the idea that everything that happens in this book could be already planned
