Depths Abundant seas of water crash back in forth, cascading between the wind and shore lines. The thrashing sounds of the crest of the wave splashed down on the rest of the water and reoccured in rhythmic intervals until the water washed up into the sandy shore of Lake Michigan. A 15 year old girl, obviously scared, jumped in the choppy water, engulfed in its waves. Thrown around and swept under the current, the girl remained under the water until being spat out along the sandy beach. Susan Power, the disorientated teen, never stopped swimming, nor never blamed the lake for her near-death experience, but accepted the mistake was hers. Regardless of the incident, Susan adored the water and felt closest to herself and her parents among the vast waters. The lake was like a second home to her, and where she’s felt the biggest connection. For each person, we can personally indulge in “our own lake” as Power and her family have demonstrated. Nature is abundant, with trees, deserts, mountains, plains, sky, and water, Power was able to claim her home and encourages us to find ours as well.x

My friend and I walked along the wet sandy shore towards the cliffs on the opposite end of the lake. With our hearts set on swimming to the middle of the lake, we tried to lift our feet from the sand that swallowed them deeper with every step. When my foot came down a sharp ping of pain led up from my foot and made my leg tremble in pain. I lifted my leg quickly above the ankle deep water as blood started gushing out into the water. Unlike Power, I did become angry with the lake and it’s lazy patrons who threw glass beer bottles into the water which stayed buried under the sand (is this necessary), after all they were the reason I was left immobile for three days and left a permanent circular scar on the bottom of my
