Suspense In Stephen King's Literature

The majority of readers identify Stephen King’s works as horror, however, he sees them as suspense novels (“Stephen King interview on Charlie Rose (1993).”). Stephen King affiliates with the horror genre because of his excessive use of gore in his novels. However, the gore is merely a side agenda that helps King shape his ideas. Instead, King’s main goal is to create suspense. By creating a vivid image of the impact of a murder, rape, or other catastrophe he is able to foster his goal by unnerving his reader and creating a conflict. Instead of visions, voices, or seizures, Eyes of the Dragon uses Randall Flagg. Even though Randall Flagg is a real person, he does some unexplainable things. For example, on page 73, Randall Flagg introduces the audience to Dragon Sand, a sand that can burn through obsidian with ease. Even the effects of this sand are unexplainable. For instance, when the King ingested the sand he died violently three days later. Stephen King’s violent description of death hints at the sand’s supernatural origin. “He belched. It was a long, arid, rattling sound. The convivial crowd in the ballroom fell silent with wonder and apprehension as the King doubled over. The musicians in the corner ceased playing. When Roland straightened up, a gasp ran through those present. The King’s cheeks were aflame with color. Smoking tears ran from his eyes. More smoke drifted from his mouth” (Eyes of the Dragon 113). In this example King used imagery to describe a supernatural event. With the knowledge that Flagg does not like Peter, he sets Peter up to take responsibility for the murder.
