The two passages, “The Monkey’s Paw” and “Cujo” are both articles with suspense, suspense is “a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.” They both have their own ways of showing suspense.

The author of monkeys paw used many ways to create suspense within the story. For example, The author explained that the last man to wish, wished for death, the way the author describes the last wish, creates a sense of suspense within the passage. A quote from the text that explains what the last wish of the man is “ i don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how i got the paw.” Another example of how the author used suspense in the was how they explained the weather was wet, and cold and stormy.

Hitchcock talks about how in his movies, he starts it as a normal, sunny day to make it more suspenseful, so the “Monkey’s Paw” goes against Hitchcock's views of suspense.
On the other hand, in “Cujo”, the movie starts off as a normal sunny, warm day, while all of the terror is actually happening. So unlike the “Monkey’s Paw” where there is no contrast, “Cujo” does go along with HItchcock's views of contrast. Hitchcock also talk about how “If the audience does know, if they have been told all the secrets that the characters do not know, they'll work like the devil for you because they know what fate is facing the poor actors. That is what is known as "playing God." That is suspense.” In “Cujo” the story talks about how when the dog came out of the barn, he had foam and blood all over his mouth and his eyes were red and rumey, with viscous liquid coming out of them. That description makes you assume that the dog has killed something, has rabies, and is most likely planning to kill something else. So it gives the audience a clue that the dog is going to go after the woman and her son, the audience would be “playing god”.
