“A sweatshop is a term coined to refer to a working environment (usually a factory) in which working conditions are inhumane and terribly uncomfortable (Sacco, 2002).” Sweatshops are found all around the world. They are in areas such as China, Bangladesh, India, and Turkey. Many are unaware that sweatshops also exist in New York, San Francisco and California.
Sweatshops are characterized by making employees work long hours, poor ventilation, hazardous conditions, and low wages. They violate labor laws and it is a very unhealthy place for individuals to work. Women, children and immigrants are exploited and are paid significantly less than minimum wage. Women and children are also often abused physically and sexually.
