Although Sydney Carton spends most of his life as an underachiever in A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, by the end of the novel he surpasses Charles Darnay to become the hero through dedication and selflessness. Carton as the hero of the novel comes as a surprises to some readers because he is the opposite of a conventional hero in the beginning of the novel. Originally presenting Carton as a subpar human, is a risk. However, Dickens is able to take Carton’s minimal strengths and turn him into a hero. Although Carton is a reprobate, it is his morals that push him above Darnay to become the hero. Sydney’s personal life is hidden for most of the novel and it is his personal life that makes him lose all of his motivation for hard work. However, despite all of his difficulties, Carton was a dedicated person that is fully committed to what he does. When he was in school he would even do other kid’s work and his trend continues even when he gets older. Although he hates working with Stryver, Carton does all of the behind the scenes work and basically solves the cases for his partner. Stryver gets all the credit because he is the one that stands up and presents the case at trial, even though he could never do all the work on his own. If Carton actually used his brain he could do so much better for himself. His problem is that he does not have any motivation to do so. Since his parents died at a very young age, it can be said that Carton had never been given direction and was never taught important life lessons. These deaths may have emotionally pushed Carton too hard and he gave up all hope. Cartons alcoholic ways show that his life has lost
