A serious issue to the Sydney marine environment is the illegal dumping of waste from all different kinds of ships. There have been a variety of instances, especially involving the navy of Australian and other countries polluting Sydney's waters. These include, the dumping of chemical warfare agents. For example, Sydney Harbour is a paradox. Sydney Harbour has been named one of the most visually pleasing and aesthetic harbours in the entire world. Many places throughout Sydney Harbour meet the guidelines. The Sydney Harbour does not meet the official guidelines in the categories of nutrients and faecal bacteria. They include microplastics (only fragments that are smaller than 5mm) are an increasing problem. Now how was this all created? Most of the sediments that are contaminating the Harbour entered prior to 1970. This was due to the fact that factories and industries were very poorly regulated. In 2018, there are three main sources that pollute our waters in sydney in the Harbour. These things are stormwater, sewage overflows and leachate from contaminated reclaimed land. What are we going to do to improve these terrible circumstances? Current problems that we can addressed include stormwater. We can improve this in our management which as a result, can significantly reduce levels of heavy metals and other pollutants. The Greater Sydney Local Land Services and local governments are undertaking important initiatives to decrease the amount of pollution in our Harbour. They are introducing many campaigns that teach adults and childrens about what littering can do to our environment. Later in this paragraph I will be talking specifically about one program that has really helped to make a change. Water use is a major sustainability issue in Sydney
