Sydnie Mainella Abigal Adams Abigal Adams' childhood was very interesting. She was born in Weymouth, Massachusettes on November eleventh, seventeen fourty-four. Born American, her birth name was Abigal Smith. Her father's name was William Smith and he was a minister in North Parrish Congregational Church of Weymouth. Abigals' mother was Elizabeth Quincy Smith. Abigal, being the second born child had three siblings, Mary, Elizabeth, and William. They were raised in a rural area. Abigal was very sickly when she was young, therfore, she was not educated. She lived during a time when most women were not educated. Her mother taught her how to read and write. Abigal had access to her fathers' library, where she could learn. She was also able to sew and cook on her own. Abigal was very knowledgeable in politics, literature, history, and philosophy. In seventeen seventy-four her husband travelled to the first continental congress in Philadelphia. In seventeen seventy-five John left to the second continental congress. Abigal managed a farm , paid bills, and educated her remaining four children by herself. John relied strongly on Abigal during this time. The two of them wrote over one thousand letters to each other. Abigal wrote him at least once a day, from seventeen seventy-four to seventeen eighty-four. She encouraged John, and other members of the continental congress to, "...remember the ladies...". Abigal was a big part of the American Revolution. At this time, she had one of the strongest female voices. Abigal was a massive help during this war. She nursed injured soldiers and provided much needed supplies, like ammunition. Essential to the Patriots side, she permitted them to hold meetings in a farmhouse she owned. At this time, she was well known for speaking out on behalf of women and slaves.
