1984 is a complex book to understand. There are symbols within the book that help simplify it. The symbols are a Glass Paperweight, and Big Brother. Both these symbols either come into the story or are pointed out because of curiosity. If Winston was not curious about the past or question the government these two major symbols would not be relevant.

Winston buys a Glass Paperweight in an antique store. When he buys it is also a time when he is trying to figure out things in the past. Since the paper weight is an antique it can symbolize when Winston is caught by the Thought Police, the glass paper weight breaks. That is like his change to finding out the past shattering. This shows the reader that Winston’s curiosity about history is what got him in trouble.

Big Brother is supposed to be a real person. So why didn’t anyone ever see him in real life? Winston is very curious about if he is real or not. This show/symbolizes to Winston that the government is full of lies making him even more curious about history.

Because of Winston being curious, these two symbols had big impacts on the book. One showed how Winston was caught. The other, Big Brother, symbolized how the government was strong and very powerful They both help make the book more understandable. The Paper Weight and Big Brother changed the
